Newspaper Headlines: Jeepers Keepers

In the recent Carabao Cup quarter final game between Tottenham and Manchester United, both keepers made lots of mistakes or gaffes and this headline focuses on these mistakes. The word ‘jeepers‘ is used when someone is surprised at something and they might shout it out: ‘Jeepers! Where did that come from?‘ There is also another expression, ‘Jeepers creepers‘ which is also used to show surprise or shock though maybe more to do with a fright; in fact there was a horror movie titled ‘Jeepers Creepers‘. So, in this headline there is a play on this phrase and instead of the word ‘creepers’ it has used ‘Keepers’ referring to the nightmare or horror show that the two goalkeepers had in the game.
